Chicago-Style Hot Dogs
A Chicago-style hot dog is a flavor-packed classic with a variety of toppings that combine tangy, crunchy, and spicy elements. The key is to never add ketchup—true Chicago dogs are all about mustard and relish!
Cook time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 4 units all-beef hot dog sausages
- 0 water
- 4 units poppy seed hot dog buns
- 0 water
- 0.25 cups yellow mustard
- 0.5 cups sweet pickle relish
- 1 small white onion finely chopped
- 4 units dill pickle spears
- 10 units sport peppers
- 4 units tomato wedges halved
- 0 celery salt to taste
Instructions
- Bring a pot of water to a simmer (do not boil). Add the hot dog sausages and heat for 5-7 minutes until warmed through. Alternatively, grill them over medium heat for added flavor.
- Lightly steam the poppy seed buns for a soft texture. You can do this by wrapping them in a damp paper towel and microwaving for 15-20 seconds or placing them in a steamer basket over simmering water for a few minutes.
- Place a hot dog sausage into each bun. Add toppings in the following order: spread yellow mustard in a zigzag pattern over the hot dog, spoon on a generous amount of sweet pickle relish, sprinkle finely chopped onions on top, place a dill pickle spear along one side of the hot dog and tomato slices along the other, top with 2-3 sport peppers, and finish with a light sprinkle of celery salt.
- Serve immediately with a side of potato chips, coleslaw, or French fries. Enjoy your authentic Chicago-style experience!
