Baked French Toast

Cook time: 45 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 pound French bread baguette
  • 3 eggs beaten
  • 1 cup milk whole or 2%
  • 0 whipping cream optional
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 0 salt pinch
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar for topping
  • 0 confectioners sugar for dusting
  • 0 blueberries
  • 0 raspberries
  • 0.5 cup maple syrup
  • 0.25 cup strawberry preserves
  • 1 tbsp Grand Marnier or orange liqueur
  • 0.75 cup heavy cream
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp confectioners sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Slice the bread into 1-1 1/2 inch thick slices.
  2. In a large bowl, combine beaten eggs, milk, optional whipping cream, cinnamon, vanilla extract, sugar, and salt. Whisk to combine.
  3. Add bread to the bowl and press slices to soak up as much of the egg mixture as possible.
  4. Arrange bread in a skillet, cut side up, and pour any remaining batter over the skillet. Cover with foil and let rest in the fridge for 15-30 minutes so the bread can soak everything up.
  5. Top each piece of bread with brown sugar and bake for 40-45 minutes uncovered until the tops are crispy.
  6. Dust with confectioners sugar and serve with blueberries, raspberries, fresh whipped cream, and a drizzle of maple cognac sauce.
  7. For the maple fruit sauce: Combine maple syrup, preserves, and Grand Marnier in a saucepan. Simmer, whisking occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  8. For the whipped cream: In a bowl, combine heavy cream, vanilla extract, and confectioners sugar. Whip until medium peaks form and chill until ready to serve.
