Quesito y Guayaba
A delicious Puerto Rican pastry featuring a blend of sweet cream cheese and guava paste, wrapped in flaky puff pastry.
Cook time: 20 minutes
Servings: 8
Ingredients
- 8 oz cream cheese softened
- 0.25 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 0 parchment paper for lining
- 1 package puff pastry thawed if frozen
- 0 flour for dusting
- 0 guava paste sliced into small strips
- 1 egg beaten
- 0 granulated sugar for sprinkling
- 0 powdered sugar optional, for dusting
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Set aside.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheets and cut them into squares (about 4 x 4 inches each).
- On each square, spread about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center, leaving a little room around the edges.
- Place a slice of guava paste on top of the cream cheese.
- Fold one corner of the pastry square over to the opposite corner, forming a triangle, or fold the sides over to create a sealed roll (either shape works).
- Brush the tops of each quesito with beaten egg to give them a golden, glossy finish.
- Sprinkle a little extra granulated sugar on top of each pastry for a sweet crunch.
- Place the quesitos on the lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastries are golden brown and puffed.
- Let the quesitos cool for a few minutes after baking. Optionally, dust them with powdered sugar for extra sweetness before serving.
