Chicken Shawarma

A delicious recipe for Chicken Shawarma with a flavorful marinade and butter glaze, cooked using an air fryer or oven.

Chicken Shawarma

Cook time: 60 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 chicken thighs
  • 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon chili flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sumac
  • 5 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 lemon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 lemon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 0.5 large onion
  • 1 serving rice or pita

Instructions

  1. Pre soak 2 wooden skewers in hot water for 20 minutes.
  2. Trim the chicken thighs of fat.
  3. Add all of the chicken marinade ingredients. Mix and massage well. Use right away or marinate for 30 minutes or more.
  4. Air fry at 390 degrees F for 22-25 minutes depending on your air fryer. Flip half way through brushing on the butter glaze. Before and after flipping the chicken. You can also oven bake at 400 degrees F for about 25 minutes. Keep an eye so it does not overcook and dry out the chicken.
  5. Remove and push on the half an onion for a base and baste with glaze one more time.
  6. Cut with a sharp knife into thin slices.
  7. Serve over rice or in a hot pita.
